Black Balsam Knob is the second highest mountain in the Great Balsam Range in southwestern North Carolina standing at 6,214 feet. Black Balsam offers panoramic views of Western North Carolina and a very comfortable summer climate rarely reaching 70 degrees Fahrenheit. However, due to its location and accessibility only from some of the highest elevation portions of the Blue Ridge Parkway, this mountain is only accessible April-November. The hike to the top is rather short, but it can be paired with some gorgeous views and a longer hike along the Art Loeb Trail towards Tennant Mountain, Cold Mountain, or Sam’s Knob. Usually, there are plenty of tourists, so it may be in your best interest to keep on hiking towards Tennant, the next closest bald, to experience the best, uninterrupted views.
